Fall Misses

Here are a list of Fall Movie Releases that I am bummed to have missed seeing in theaters.  I will have to wait to see them via rental or own.

5th Republican Debate Moderated by CNN's Wolf Blitzer

This was a pretty good debate.  Actually in my opinion, the undercard debates were always good. CNN did a great job this time.  Wolf handled it better than Anderson did, and I really like Anderson. Lindsay Graham really stood out not because he had great ideas, but because he was ever so passionate.

Huckabee, Pataki and Santorum seemed like they were trying to be as passionate, but could not match Graham.  Graham also really stood out because he did not conform to the other three on most of the questions.

Check it out if you like.

As for the primetime debate, most folks tried many ways to stand out , but all sounded pretty much the same.   Except for Kasich and Paul.  Those two seemed more reasonable.

There was an interesting bit of a fight between Trump and Bush.  The same with the latinos Cruz and Rubio.

Carson just tried to make jabs at the moderators due to his continual contempt of the media.  Remember, he has had it harder than everyone else, even Obama.

So take a look at this debate as well if you have not already and is interested.  Feel free comment below.

Enjoy.

Movie Review - Creed

Sylvester Stallone decided to drop another Rocky movie, but this time he is not the main focus.  In fact it is not call Rocky, but Creed.  I still call it Rocky VII.  We meet Adonis Creed who had become a great boxer on his own, but needed to go somewhere to become something bigger.  He finds Balboa in Philly and the rest is history.

I felt that Michael B. Jordan was a great choice for the role of the Son of Apollo Creed.  He definitely look much like Carl Weathers (Apollo Creed).  The scenes with Stallone and Jordan were ok, but funny at times.  Also had a few blinks of other well known actors like Leon and Phylicia Rashad.  I really enjoyed this film and would invite anyone to check this one out.  Not sure if Stallone is thinking on continuing the work with Creed.

We shall see.

Grade: 7/10

Here is the trailer if you like to see it.  Enjoy.

Make Your Mark

Per the request of a friend, we decided to see the movie, The Good Dinosaur.   I will admit I was not sure if I wanted to see this movie even though I never miss a Pixar film, but I am a bit cautious when Pixar decides to release 2 films in one year.   The same with The Marvel Cinematic Universe.  So with a slightly closed mind I prepared to see this movie.

The movie starts off with a hypothetical asking what if 65 million years ago, the asteroid didn't hit the Earth killing the dinosaurs.  Even though I do not enjoy speculation,  I do love hypothetical movies.  Millions of years later it shows how life on Earth could be if that happens.  It was kind of nice, showing the birth of a new family and those in the family learning their way I life.

It was to me, pretty much predictable until the young dinosaur starts on his challenging journey.  In a nutshell, he suffers a loss, meets some new people, learns some life lessons and makes a friend from an enemy.

This movie had to grow on me and it did.  As it progressed, it just got better, to me.   The two folks who went with me weren't too impressed (including the one why suggested it), but I ended up thoroughly pleased with it.

One of them said it was really good from a kids prospective, but I rate all movies mostly the same.  This movie was very good.   Like Inside Out, it was pretty thought provoking and could challenge your way of thinking only if you open your mind to the hypothetical.

Check it out if ya like.  I would see it again with my nieces and nephews.

Score: 7/10

Negative Focus

It is very hard not to focus on the negative.  It is easy for us to say that we need to stay more positive and we do, but those negative feelings, thoughts and/or encounters are hard to avoid.

What I am trying to do is take these thoughts I have and the encounters I experience and turn them into a positive focus by simply learning and applying.

Like I said before, it is easier to say this verses doing it, but I am really going to try.

So I need to try to:

1. Take in what I face and think.
2. Learn from them and apply what could work.
3. Continue to move forward, dispite what negativity surrounds me.

I am my worst enemy and I must work to overcome it.

I can't control my surroundings, but I can control me.

Now if you excuse me,  I have some work to do.

Until next time........

Fri, Sat. and Sunday Fall '15 Premiere Reviews Part Two

ABC - Grade 6/10
Ken Jeong is back in television and is now in a staring role showing off his past profession in a comedic way.  He does have a very funny supporting cast including Dave Foley (Kids in the Hall and News Radio), Suzy Nakamura (Curb Your Enthusiasm and Ten Things I The About You), Albert Tsai (Trophy Wife and Fresh of the Boat) and Tisha Campbell-Martin (Martin & House Party).  This show is a nice watered down comedy show that ABC produces with a slight edge without offending anyone (kind of).  It's is worth checking out.

NBC - Grade: 8/10
The folks are back and they are ready to mess with and offend.  The premiere season host was Miley Cyrus and I must say that I am still curious on why there is so much extreme hatred for this woman.  She is being herself.  This pattern of her becoming the person she is now is not that shocking.  At least not to me.  Now is she really pushing it too far?  Probably, but that is a matter of perspective.  Like I said, this now that shocking, I kind saw this transition happening since Hanna Montana.  You people need to change your focus.  Moving on.  I felt Miley did great, the skit Hillary Clinton was in was fun, Weekend Update was, as usual, a blast to see and the rest of the cast did a great job in this premiere.  I look forward to a great season.

CBS - Grade: 8.5/10
Patricia Arquette is kicking it strong like she did on the past hit NBC show, Medium.  The last remaining Crime Scene Investigation show enters it's second season.  Now this is the first CSI show that I actually started on season one.  Correction, the second CSI show.  I also tried out CSI NY starring Gary Sinise, but tapered off after season two because of interest and mostly time.  I am enjoying Cyber though I find the cast kind of questionable, including Shad Moss (formerly rapper Bow Wow) and new member, Ted Danson (Cheers and the original CSI series).  I don't think transistioning Danson from CSI: Las Vegas to Cyber in D.C. was a bad idea, just unsure how it will turn out.  We shall see I guess.  I must also add that I am not happy that Peter MacNicol is no longer on the show.  Not sure why he is gone.  They used the story of him being promoted, so maybe he will have a re-occurring role?  Who knows?  He might have a new big project on the horizon.  That's usually how it works.  I like him on Cyber although I rather see him in comedic roles like in Ally McBeal (BTW, curious about Calista Flockhart in Supergirl).  Last, but not least, Mr. James Van Der Beek  I have enjoyed a lot of his work since Dawson's Creek, which I have never seen, but was curious how he would be after that and he (along with Joshua Jackson) are doing great!!!  The ladies  of the Creek, Katie Holmes and Michelle Williams, not so much, but I love you guys, too.  Van Der Beek turns into an ultimate bad ass character both in braun and brain as now only does he shows his awesome skills as a detective/investigator he also shows the techs in the show what he knows in their field as well.   Very impressive, Elijah!  If you haven't checked out this series, try it out.  If you were a fan of the CSIs you may also like this one.  This show can turn into the long survivor for the CSI franchise like Special Victims Unit is for Law & Order.

Top 10 Anime For All Ages

Now just you know, this list here is very different than it may seem.  They explain that this list is more about your toned down very less violent animes out there.  You may be disappointed by this list or you may be pleased.  Check it out and see what you think.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Official Trailer - Review

THAT! JUST! HAPPENED!

The Official Trailer has released!  Ticket sales in the US have sold out pretty much for the weekend release.  Maybe for the entire week up to Christmas.  This trailer.............Ok I was going to rant on that word, but I am going to leave that for future blog entry. This trailer was very impressive and epic.  You can definitely tell that this movie is being done by J.J. Abrams.  Very ominous and looks action packed.  I can see it being as deep or dark like the Star Trek movies he directed.

The X-Wings look great, the Tie Fighters look great and my favorite, Millennium Falcon, looked outstanding.  I wish it would stopped being chased by the empire.  FIGHT BACK!!!!

I didn't jizz like most of the Sci-Fi fandom world, but I am more excited about this film.  Our marathon will begin in a couple weeks.  One movie each week.  I wish I can go through the Clone Wars series, but I don't own it.

I hope you all will have fun with your own marathons (I Know You Are Having Marathons!).  Also, enjoy Episode VII.

Later.................

Teens REACT To Nintendo (NES)

I love videos like this. It kind of shows how closed minded some of us can be and how open others could be.

The final thoughts are great including that "If you owned a console like this now, you would be considered the coolest of the group!" I know this because I own a Sega Genesis and people's mouths drop when they learn of this, but I don't play it because the controllers still stick. I have an advanced on with wireless controllers and built in games that I sometimes play.

So check out the video and enjoy.

CW
Alright.  This is an absolutely new concept.  Well actually it a recycled concept that was used in the '90s by a show called Cop Rock.  Somewhat serious show with a bit of a musical format placed in it.  Starts off with an genius idiot young lawyer who never got over her boyfriend of 2 months, then after running into him over 10 years later makes a very stupid decision.  Now she must figure things out with this guy and in the adventure, she makes some unusual and hilarious allies.  Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is a hilarious addition to the CW.  It is what I call an expansion of the concept from Jane The Virgin.  Check it out!

Two Sides Of One Coin

think it is hilarious when I watch a video and then see 2 opposing groups report on it.

Example:  Ann Coulter visits The View promoting her new book ¡Adios America!  As expected, the View hosts and Coulter get into a heated discussion and it gets nowhere.

Here is how the video is reported by opposingly polarized internet news groups just by their headlines alone.

If You Only News (Extreme Left):

4 Awesome Minutes Of Women On "The View" Pummeling Ann Coulter.

The Blaze (Extreme Right):

Ann Coulter Leaves ‘The View’ Co-Host Tongue-Tied With Quick Counterpunch to Attack During Seriously Tense On-Air Clash

It is just amazing to me how this happens and the fans of these extreme groups roll with it without seeing the other side.

Just mind blowing.

Blackness

I saw a clip of Wolf Blitzer interviewing Ben Carson and he asks him,"Is President Obama a 'Real Black President'?".  The clip ended without Carson's answer, but it had me thinking:

What by definition is a 'Real Black President'?

Something to ponder.

Do you know?

History Lesson

What do you know about me?  If you saw me, would you guess that I hold a black belt in Tae Kwon Do?  Would you guess that I also have experience in other martial arts?  Well I do.  I have a slightly vast martial arts history and I hold various belts in the arts.  I started the martial arts pretty late in life in my sophomore year of college at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.  I thoroughly enjoyed the arts, but as I didn't do so well with my weight control, my proficiency in the martial arts decreased.

My practice stopped in December 2003.  I have always wanted to return, but everything else got more and more busy that I didn't make time to re-insert the arts back into my life.  Now, during my post transplant recovery I decided to return to the world of Martial Arts.  I am starting with Tai Chi Chuan.  I practiced this art before in Illinois for a year and that ended when we moved to Texas, but now I will return.  I am debating on if I will return to other arts, but my weight and neuropathy will dictate that.

Here is the list of my martial arts history:

WARHAWK KARATE CLUB (June 1994 - March 1995)
WHITEWATER, WI
This is the first martial arts school I started to practice at.  They practice the style of Ji Do Kwon of the Tae Kwon Do art and Go Ju Ryu of Karate.  It was ran by Jeff, Barbara, and Dave Barnett.  It was considered a pretty rough school with an extensive belt test.  I received my green belt there on December, 1994.  Now the school is now operated under Master Trent Norrell.

UFMA KARATE (September 1996 - March 1997)
WHITEWATER, WI
This school was born when Warhawk Karate kind of died and was ran by Mike DuClos and Tony McDonald.  It's a branch of Lieker's Karate & Self-Defense, which is based in Hays, Kansas.  UFMA stands for United Fellowship of Martial Artists.  They practice the same art as Warhawk Karate, with Self-Defense and weapons.  While the old school was focused more on defense and discipline, UFMA is geared more towards sport karate, which as an emphasis on tournament play/point sparring.  To my knowledge the school is still running strong and I wish them well.

WARHAWK MARTIAL ARTS  (September 1998 - October 1998)
WHITEWATER, WI
I joined this school hoping that things would get better in my martial arts career, but it just got worse.  This school practice the following arts: Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Kickboxing, and Self-Defense.  This school was pretty nice to work out with, but things just didn't work out.  They emphasized on Self-Defense and Philosophy along with basic and advances techniques.

SOUTHWEST SUBURBAN YMCA TAE KWON DO CLUB (1999 - 2002)
GREENFIELD, WI
I joined this school through the wishes of my friend, Aaron Ploetz, who started working out with the school months before.  The head instructor was Charles Eggert and this man was like a father to me (don't worry, I love my actual father).  The school practiced the style of Ji Do Kwon in the Tae Kwon Do art along with self-defense and weapons. This school shows the highest level of respect and honor that I have ever seen in a martial arts school.  This is I achieved my black belt.  Just first degree.  I was qualified to test for 2nd degree, but time and distance wouldn't allow.  I do appreciate that my master (Peter Chan by this time) tried to flex as much as he can to make the test possible.  It just couldn't happen.  This is also the place that I proposed to the most wonder woman in my life, Jennifer Leigh Crouch Clark.

IWU TAI CHI CLUB (2000 - 2002)
BLOOMINGTON, IL
I learned of this club while searching for a TKD school in Bloomington.  Tai Chi is the root of Kung Fu, which I wish to learn so I decided to join the club and I must say it is very, very interesting.  There are much older members of this club and everyone is very friendly.  There are no ranks in this club, everyone is equal, except for the instructors,  of course.

IWU TAE KWON DO CLUB (2000 - 2002)
BLOOMINGTON, IL
I entered this club just to work out and stay in tune with my practice in Tae Kwon Do.  I am now an unofficial assistant instructor in the club.  This club was ran by Justin Hand, 2nd Dan in Tae Kwon Do and student at Illinois Wesleyan University, a well mannered and inspirational young man, who taught a great class.  The club is very much different to what I'm was use to, but I do enjoy it.  This helps me to prepare to run my own club or school.

I actually ended up running my own school, but it only lasted for a year because we decided to move to Texas.  I do miss it, but I am good now.  So like I said, I have returned to martial arts starting with Tai Chi down here in Texas and we shall see where it leads.  Wish me luck.

Please feel free to comment, share and follow this blog.

Until next time................

FOX
So after taking out Molock and Henry (Horseman of War) and the loss of Katrina and Irving, Ichabod and Abby separate and reunite after 9 months.  Even though they have removed a powerful foe and new one has emerged with her box.  This new being is so powerful that she took out Abraham (Horseman of Death).  Ichabod and Abby along with sister, Jenny jump into a new mission as the new enemy had unleashed a familiar creature from Crane's past.  I was happily surprised to see Shannyn Sossamon (Wayward Pines, Sinister 2 and Mistresses) has joined the cast.

CBS
A new attempt for a CBS medical drama that is staged to be one of the most intense ones ever made.  Code Black is a status in a hospital ER when the number of patients out number the recourses.  A new batch of residents come to Angel Memorial to get through their first three years only to find they entered a crazy world of hurt.  Starring Marcia Gay Harden, Raza Jaffrey and Luis Guzman.  These three experienced professionals will attempt to guide them.  Looks promising, but I think they maybe trying a bit too hard at times.  We shall see.

Tuesday Fall '15 Premiere Reviews Part Two

FOX
John Stamos gets his own show and it seemed cheesy, but worth a look.  You all should know the premise even  from the title.  Middle aged, successful businessman get a huge wake up call when a young man comes in and drops a bomb that he is his son.  Oh, but wait, another bomb has been dropped!  He has a granddaughter, too.  A very cute one at that!  So now he has a choice, pursue this new chapter in his life or run.  You can pretty much guess.   It also stars Christina Milian (also a singer, look her up), who's character I will need to get use to.  She only pops up twice and I don't really like her, yet.  There is also a brief cameo where if you have seen the previews, you would have noticed.  Check out this show.  It is very funny.  I think it could turn out to be a great show as long as they continue to have material.
Status: Keep     Grade: 8/10

FOX
John Stamos and now Rob Lowe.  Lowe teams up with Fred Savage and William Devane to bring you The Grinders.  An award winning actor has his TV series finale and is now trying a new meaning in life.  He returns home and tries to enter the family business that he admired so much that he did a TV show mimicking it except to find that his family does not see him of value and chooses not to have him return.  The youngest brother later realizes that the solution to his struggles in law resides in his older brother and so did older bro.  So of course he returns and all becomes well.  The adventure in this show should be fun.  It seems like an exact cookie cut of Grandfathered.  Worth a check.  Hopefully it will last.
Status: Curious     Grade 6/10

ABC
Well things are getting very intense as Skyy or Daisy heads up the Inhuman division of S.H.E.I.L.D. and tracks down other Inhumans that may spout up after the water supply was contaminated.  They finally achieve in recuing one and also gets an idea on who else are tracking them.  Hint: They are not Hydra.  Since the disappearance if Simmons, Fitz has been crazily determined to find out where she is and how to get to her.  This looks like it will be an amazing season, especially with Daisy and Lincoln showing off their abilities.

COMEDY CENTRAL
As I was sad to see Stew Beef go I was also very excited for Trevor Noah to take over.  Not only did Mr. Noah come in, some new correspondents came in as well, including Roy Wood, Jr. and Desi Lydic.  It is also great to see some veterans staying including Al Madrigal, Jordan Klepper and Hasan Minhaj.  Not sure what happened to Jessica Williams.  We shall see I guess.  Anyway, after the first week, Trevor has done a great job.  He does seem nervous, but it is good to see that he incorporates his stand up comedy into the show.  This should be a very great career for Trevor and if he leaves sooner than most of us think, this should really help slingshot his career.  Congratulations Trevor Noah.  You just kill that show and prove that Jon Stewart and Comedy Central made a great choice.

Sunday Fall '15 Premiere Reviews Part One

FOX
The search for a new captain is on.  While the Nine-Nine is preparing to meet their new captain, Captain Holt has moved on to his new assignment working very close to the deputy chief.  Public Affairs is his new domain and it turns out to be much more mundane that he thought.  He is now faced with the dicission of continuing this new assignment or just high tailing it out.  Bill Hader guest stars in a funny premiere that IMO, was not that much funnier that any other episode.  Still a keeper though.  BTW, Andy Samburg did a great job as host of the 2015 Emmy Awards.  Bravo!!!!

So Phil and Carol has escaped Tuscon, AZ and is kind of living it up around the nation, again, except this time together.  It looks like they are having a blast, but later they felt something was missing.  No guest stars on this premiere and the episode was pretty funny for the sophomore season.  We shall see what helps them find out what was missing and if they will meet any new people in this new world.

ABC
I know this show is known for it dark sides, but this season premiere is shown a one of the most darkest so far as Swan struggles with her new decision of becoming The New Dark One.  We also learn of a new twist that hopefully explain the origins of the blade that controls The Dark One.  Everyone runs to try to same Swan from her new role, but of course, something bad has to happen.  Hell it's the season premiere, something bad has to happen.  Geez!  Like every season, I am looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.  Everyone is back along with a few others.  Oh and Regina was able to out smart someone for a change.

The fam is back and a new adventure has started.  Quagmire and Peter take on a long lost dream of Glenn's that at first was a great idea, but of course Peter had to do something that made it go oh so wrong.  In the meantime, Stewie and Brian took on an extra special trip that turned out to not be a fun one.  The season starts off with a blast and was very entertaining.  I can't see any reason why this show would be ever cancelled, unless the public becomes intolerant again.

Talk about something new!  This show, IMO, comes out of left field and takes on a new scenario in a region of the United States that is usually not touched on a TV show.  A young ambitious couple takes a community investment and heads north to head up a huge business and promise a big return to them.  Things don't go a planned and they had to make small detours to make end meet.  Eventually a huge opportunity knocks and they go in head first.  Starring some acting legends including Delroy Lindo and Don Johnson.   This show seems like a reincarnation of the great hit show, Dallas.  Too bad it's reboot or continuation didn't do so well.

Talk about very, very complex.  You would have thought that Shonda Rhimes had something to do with it, but nope she has not.  This show is brought to you by Joshua Safran who helped produced Smash and Gossip Girl.  A huge handful of new possible agents enter the FBI training camp at Quantico.   Things start out very well until a huge disaster happen in a major city and one of the leading agent students is placed with the task to find out who of her class could have committed this terrorist act.  Some insane parts and intense moments made this premiere very intriguing, IMO.  Check it out if you haven't already.

Movie Review: Scortch Trials

So yeah!  I am watching the new book to film franchises!  So what of it.  I did it before with:

So now I have moved on to franchises including:

I know you would say, "but Wil.  These are series for the teenagers.  There is no reason you should show any interest in them!".  True, but I do show interest.  I will admit that I was very resistant in checking them out, but later I did and I found them intriguing.  So, judge all you want!  This is where I am and that's that!  Yeah!!

And with that I have pick up a new franchise:

Like the previous trifecta of series, my wife was into the initial films especially after reading the books and then after seeing the trailers for their sequels, I became interested.  That happened again with The Maze Runner.  My whole deal with movies is that the trailer/preview must sell me.  It must show interesting to me, not give away too much and the casting must make sense.  With Maze Runner, it just didn't sell.  The premise was a bit too obvious and silly to me.  I know there is usually more, a lot more to this, but the job of the trailer is to sell the movie, right?  So, I said nay to the movie, but then after seeing the trailer for the sequel, The Scorch Trials, I was very interested.  So we rent the initial film and later checked out the sequel.

Now on to the review of the sequel.  This movie in some way showed some predictability, but not too much.  The kids move on from their rescue and brave the scorch on their way to try to find answers about the maze trail, WCKD and the virus.  They didn't exactly have a goal.  Like teenagers, they were completely impulsive.  They did learn a lot through their journey and reached a new destination.  Now something has happen that makes then need to return what they were running from.  Very Star Wars like.  I was happy to see Giancarlo Esposito and Lily Taylor in the movie.  I am looking to the next installment to see how this finishes out.
